The lowering of a person's body temperature to below that required for normal metabolism and bodily functions is called Hypothermia. Boaters and seamen operating away from shore in cold weather have little chance for survival if they fall overboard or have to abandon a sinking ship. They can lose body heat rapidly in cold water and die in a matter of minutes.
An immersion suit is a special type of waterproof dry suit that protects the wearer from hypothermia when immersed in cold water, after abandoning a sinking or capsized vessel. They usually have attached boots, and a hood, and either built-on gloves or watertight wrist seals.
Even when not required, immersion suits are recognized as an important piece of life saving equipment for boaters operating in cold waters. Suits should be stored and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions, and must be readily available for crew members and passengers. Everyone aboard should know how to use them in an emergency.
